A fast 10k – Kerstcorrida Tielt

First of all, a happy, healthy, injury-free 2013 to all of you.

And with that out of the way: I finally did it. I finally ran a sub-40 minutes 10k. I guess I’ve known for a while that I could do this, and I guess most of my running buddies knew this as well, but I never really did it. But now it’s official. Well… kind of official…

But not really. As always, I was a bit late. I knew the registrations ended half an hour before the start so I made sure I arrived just in time. But finding a parking spot turned out to be quite hard and I had to make a run for it. I think I arrived just in time, but there was a queue in front of me and when I was about 5th in line, they closed the registration. We could still buy a number and could enter, but we wouldn’t be in the results. Screw that! I’d just run along then.

Of course, I also forgot to charge my garmin, so there’s actually no proof at all I did this. Except for one small thing, but I’ll come back to that later.

And so I did. I started somewhere in the pack but quickly moved towards the top 50. I seemed to have found my matches there and the pace was solid. At first I thought I’d have to slow down because this was a lot faster than what I was used to, but the opposite thing happened: I started getting “in the zone”, my endurance kicked in and I sped up a bit and left the little group behind. Still 6k to go though, and I was all singled out. But hey, that’s kind of my thing anyway.

With about 1k to go I caught up with 2 guys who’d been in front of me the whole time. I stayed behind them for a while, catching my breath, letting them take the lead for the biggest share of the uphill & against-the-wind part, but then took over and immediately sped up. I left one of them behind, but the other one followed me like my shadow and then placed his own attack to which I had no answer ready.

In the last straight, I caught up with another runner and finished 43rd out of 759 finishers in 38’38”. As for the proof: Immediately after finishing, I looked behind me to see the number of the guy I just overtook in the final straight and then checked the results. You can see me finish just in front of him here:
